Stand up and take note: this is great wine from Priorat.  And that's regardless of whether it is typically Priorato in style.  It trades textbook minerality for lushness, and the fruit is star quality.  In the mouth, there's an explosion of grape matter that leaves coffee, chocolate, peanut brittle and vanilla.  Almost drinkable right now but best from 2009. -M.S. August 2007

Founded in 1992, Celler Vall Llach has quickly risen to the forefront of the quality leaders of Priorat. The winery is located in the heart of Porrera, one of the region’s principal villages. Opera singer Lluís Llach has spared no expense in the vineyard and winery in order to produce the highest quality wines.

We went to an old theater in Porrera that had been converted into a restaurant with Vall Llach’s manager, Salus, and had lunch where we watched a young waiter in soiled jeans bring to a family an extensive lunch. Shaking his head he said, “You can’t serve a three-hundred Euro paella in a tee-shirt.” This philosophy extends to their vineyard and winery…meticulous attention to detail, and quality before anything.

The 2004 Vall Llach Priorat is a monument to quality. It is 65% Cariñena, 20% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon; the Cariñena is from 60 to 90-year-old vines. To understand the excitement about Priorat in the world of wine today, you only have to taste this wine to see why…
