90 points Wine & Spirits - Rich and earthy, this shows broad notes of guava and preserved lemon, tightly wound in a finely detailed structure. The texture is sliky and alluring, and the saline mineral notes become more intense the longer it sits in the glass.
Laurenz V (or L5) is a new Austrian project from our old friend Lenz Moser, whose family has been in the wine business for generations. The focus is on Gruner Veltliner only, and two distinct bottlings are imported to the United States: Laurenz V “Charming” Gruner Veltliner and Laurenz und Sophie “Singing” Gruner Veltliner.
Gruner Veltliner is the most widely planted grape variety in Austria, and serves as the country’s wine ambassador. It is made in two broadly defined styles, either serious and age worthy or lighthearted and quaffable.
The Laurenz und Sophie “Singing” Gruner Veltliner is in the lighthearted style. Inspired by Lenz’s daughter Sophie (the sixth generation), this is a fun wine that can easily be sipped, served as an aperitif, or enjoyed with a wide range of foods. Most of the fruit is from the Kremstal region, with a small amount from the Weinviertal.
